The novel The Dead Shaman in the Garage is a postmodern, mythic reworking of the Tale of the Magi with an ecological theme (Southwest desertification). This mythic magic takes place in December during the Christmas-solstice season. The “Kings” are three earnest-but-shady nightclub partners from the Mexican border town Piedras Negras (Black Rocks); they track their trapeze midget couple (“our star attraction”) northward following their bizarre disappearance into the heavens during a midnight high wire show; in hot pursuit this brings the three nightclub “kings” to San Antonio, the major setting for the narrative.
In San Antonio the plot shifts to the Anglo family of Cookie and Larry Medlar. Much to their surprise, the Medlars experience a seeming miracle in the ectoplasmic, ghostly appearance of an ancient shaman in their townhouse garage. Cookie and Larry are an empty nest academic couple, recently moved from New England to South Texas; Cookie, a Harvard-grad, seer and leftist, feminist blogger, and her physicist husband Larry, adopt the Healer who begins to recover his vitality. Cookie and Larry act as the initial “parents” to the Healer’s return before the curiously delayed manifestation of his future parents, the midget Mexican couple from the Border. Bringing all intriguing social actors together at last, the official forces of law and order and mythic destiny collide in a muddled battle for secular, scientific & spiritual control; a magical empowerment of the principals leads in ensuing months to a possible fortuitous string of breakthroughs healing this drought-weary region, and for the long range, legendary cures for the ecological ravages and energy shortages of the 21st century.

Southwest desertification – a very real issue today, and part of the bigger problem of global warming – is the core around which this fiction is written. But it was so funny, there were times I could not help laughing out loud. A mystery from the beginning to the fairy tale ending, the book includes references to “La Frontera;” green housekeeping (yes, that is exactly why my vacuum cleaner has bags); academic politics and jealousies; the hapless female graduate student played by both sides in academic politics; Higgs-Boson particles and CERN; corporate greed; politics from the local mayor to the White House; competition and jealousies among law enforcement at all levels; a talking-to-the-reader cat; and much more, all seamlessly interwoven. The central characters, Cookie and Larry Medlar, could almost be the middle aged couple next door, except for the matter of fact way they relate to the dead shaman in the garage. It is in their home and yard that much of the action takes place, and it is here that some of the funniest deadpan lines, but also the most serious statements come. The book, after all, is entitled The Dead Shaman in the Garage.
This fiction, concerned about the very serious subject of Southwest desertification, has a little bit of everything, with a marvelously humorous delivery. An enjoyable read, from beginning to end.
